The winners of the third round of Battestin Fellowships were announced at the Society’s Annual Meeting on Friday, March 20, 2015.
The winners and the titles of their projects are:
- Andrew Ferguson, “The Shoaf Collection: William S. Burroughs’s Texts in Flux”;
- Christian F. Howard, “Reconstructing Faulkner’s Universe: The Fictional Status of the Extra-Textual Material in the World of Yoknapatawpha”;
- Benjamin Lee, “The Manufacture of Books and the Making of Robert Frost”; and
- Ethan C. Reed, “The Novels of John Dos Passos in the1930s: Physical Features and Literary Reception.”
These fellowships are named in honor of Martin Battestin, emeritus professor of English at UVA, and his wife Ruthe, a literary scholar and member of the Society’s Council. The aim of the fellowships is to provide summer support for research in the UVA library by UVA graduate students who are working on bibliographical or textual projects. This year four fellowships, each amounting to $3500, have been awarded.
The Selection Committee consisted of David Gants (English department of Florida State University and editor of Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America), G. Thomas Tanselle (president of the Bibliographical Society of UVA), and David Whitesell (curator in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at UVA and a member of the Society’s Council).
