The winners of the 2014 Book Collecting Contest are:

First place, $300

Audrey Golden (Ph.D. program, Dept. of English) for “Pablo Neruda and the Global Politics of Poetry”

Second place, $150

 Stephanie Kingsley (M.A. program, Dept. of English) for “A Collection of Early Editions of Mercedes of Castile, by James Fenimore Cooper”

Honorable Mention$75

 Winner of the BSUVA Rare Book School Fellowship

Audrey Golden

Ten students, from third year through Ph.D. candidates, submitted entries to the 2014 Book Collecting Contest. The collections covered a range of topics including “Steamer” editions of Jules Verne, Russian novels, Judaica, and the novels of Brian Moore.

All the contestants received gift certificates generously donated by twelve local booksellers.

Ms. Golden went on to win third prize in the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest. She was honored at a ceremony at the Library of Congress on October 17, 2014. Her prize included $500 and a $250 gift to the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia. The national contest is sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA), the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies (FABS), the Center for the Book, and the Rare Books and Special Collections Division(the Library of Congress), with major support from the Jay I. Kislak Foundation.
